Off-Grid Energy Transformation
From High-Cost Diesel Dependency to Stable, Low-Cost Energy
This example is based on a real project implemented in Ras Al Khaimah, where a remote desert operation required a reliable and economically sustainable energy solution.
Initial Situation
The entire operation was fully dependent on diesel generators as the only source of electricity.
This created several critical challenges:
- Extremely high energy production costs
- Continuous dependence on fuel supply logistics
- Limited operational flexibility
- Exposure to fuel price fluctuations
The cost of electricity reached approximately 2.2 AED per kWh, significantly impacting the overall economics of the operation.
Key Challenges
The objective was not only to reduce costs, but to fundamentally improve the reliability and scalability of the energy system.
The main challenges included:
- Ensuring stable energy supply in a fully off-grid environment
- Reducing long-term operational expenses
- Eliminating dependence on diesel generation
- Enabling future growth without energy limitations
PURE TECH Approach
Instead of replacing the existing system directly, the project was designed as a fully integrated energy solution combining production, storage and intelligent management.
The solution included:
- Installation of a solar energy system optimized for local climate conditions
- Integration of battery storage with a capacity of approximately 0.5 MW
- Implementation of an intelligent control system to manage energy flows
- Gradual reduction and replacement of diesel generator usage
The system was designed to ensure continuous operation while maximizing efficiency and minimizing reliance on backup generation.
Results
The implementation resulted in a fundamental transformation of the energy system:
- Energy cost reduced from approximately 2.2 AED/kWh to 0.2 AED/kWh
- Significant reduction in diesel consumption
- Stable and reliable off-grid energy supply
- Ability to operate without major energy constraints
Financial Impact
From a business perspective, the project delivered strong financial performance:
- Approximately 10× reduction in energy costs
- Return on investment within approximately 3 years
- System lifetime exceeding 15 years
This resulted in a long-term, predictable and significantly lower cost of energy.
Operational Impact
Beyond financial savings, the project enabled:
- Independence from fuel supply logistics
- Increased operational stability
- Flexibility for future expansion
- Reduced exposure to external risks
